CONFERENCES & EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES ARMI National Atlas for Amphibian Distributions ARMI stands for Amphibian Research and Monitoring Initiative, and the National Atlas for Amphibian Distributions, a.k.a. ARMI Atlas, "was created to identify where amphibians occur in the United States, and to identify potential gaps in our knowledge of amphibian distributions." The ARMI Atlas enables users to find out when and where amphibians were last documented in their area and points up areas where amphibians have not been documented, to guide future research. The site supplies a growing storehouse of data from long-term monitoring programs to help researchers monitor population changes, which can provide important indicators for environmental conditions. Current and historic records, compiled from a range of sources, are provided, including: published, peer-reviewed scientific literature; museum records; state and regional herpetological atlases; and other authoritative and validated observations. The atlas is browsable for the families of Anura (frogs and toads) or Caudata (salamanders and newts). Backyard
Burning The website is maintained by staff at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and its introduction says, "Burning household waste in your backyard is harmful to your health and the environment. This site explains these problems and provides alternatives." Includes information about state and local backyard burning practices and restrictions, sections on human health and environmental effects, brochures, and related links. Expert.com: Environmental Business Information This global portal provides an overview of journals, books, events, job listings, software, services, and technologies in the environmental sector. The website is organized for easy browsing in topical categories such as: health & safety, air, soil & groundwater, water & wastewater, waste & recycling. Other categories lead to types of information, such as software, jobs, books, articles, news, and events. Expeditions in Conservation (World Wildlife Fund) This website offers readers a chance to travel virtually alongside scientists working with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Conservation teams travel to varied ecosystems to assess conditions and restore animals to historic habitat. Expeditions provide amazing photographs and daily posts from participants in WWF efforts to fulfill its mission: "to protect endangered species, save endangered species, and address global threats." Galapagos: Way Beyond Darwin Marine biologist, Dr. Carole Baldwin, Curator of the Division of Fishes at the Smithsonian Institution "provides viewers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the making of the popular 3-D IMAX film about the Galapagos Islands" in this website sponsored by the Pfizer Foundation as part of the Smithsonian's Distinguished Lecture Series. Video and slides display species found on and near the islands, and fifteen new underwater species were identified during the documented expedition. High School Environmental Center from the EPA The U.S. Environmental Protection agency presents this website specifically aimed at high school students. A team of scientists compiled the information on the site from EPA and other reliable sources in order to provide good, easy-to-understand information about air and water issues, waste and recycling, conservation, health and safety, ecosystems, and community environmental conditions. Site authors followed guidelines developed by the North American Association for Environmental Education in order to ensure that they included only truly educational materials. Another feature of the site is announcements of internship and scholarship opportunities, environmental careers, and community projects. This site complements EPA's other sites for teachers and younger students (http://www.epa.gov/kids, http://www.epa.gov/students, http://www.epa.gov/teachers). Household Products Database from the National Library of
Medicine This database presents hazardous chemical data on numerous household products and enables users to search or browse by product or ingredient. Sections of the website are: auto products, pesticides, home/inside, landscape/yard, home maintenance, personal care, and hobbies and crafts. Examples of products for which data are available are cleaning materials, pesticides, cosmetics, and caulk. Chemical data is compiled from material safety data sheets (MSDS). Product or company names are also searchable. Lichen Coverage Map: Contribute to its creation The Pathfinder Science community is creating a lichen coverage map of North America and needs help from anyone interested. Research indicates that lichens (and the tardigrades living on them) can be used to assess atmospheric levels of sulfur dioxide (SO2). The data needed to create this base map of coverage is easy to collect, and each winter the Pathfinder community does a lichen survey. All the information is available online to show interested participants how to sample and report the data. Mapping is posted online so that all participants can begin looking for patterns as the project progresses. Interesting maps have been created from the work that has been done to date; these are accessible at: http://pathfinderscience.net/maps/lichen. More data are needed to develop a broad scale map. Students interested in contributing data should read the "Research Focus" (http://pathfinderscience.net/so2/cexres_foc.cfm) area of the website. Natural History Museum's Wildlife Garden Britain has at times been referred to as "a nation of gardeners," so the Web-browsing public should not be taken unawares to read that the Natural History Museum's Wildlife Garden in London has developed a website that is both pleasing to the eye and rather informative as well. For those planning a visit to London, there is information about the hours and operation of the garden itself, along with details about the various scientific work conducted there on a regular basis. The Habitats section offers a brief overview (along with some nice photos) of each of the major regions represented in the Garden's grounds. Those covered here include the chalk downland, lowland heath, oak woodland, and that most British of environments, the hedgerow. Perhaps the most entertaining section of the site is the interactive area, where visitors can listen to bats flying over the garden, peruse a gallery of lovely images, and examine a pictorial record of the garden during the year 2000. It presents detailed information about the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Safe Mercury Management Program (SMMP); state programs for medical and dental waste, mercury in automobile switches, collection, and schools; and state legislation and regulations. It also includes sections on FAQ and related links. Data for ozone levels is displayed by county, with population figures provided, also populations of groups vulnerable to ozone pollution. Links are given to full reports for the state and region as well as for past years' reports. TAOS Project to Prevent Wild & Exotic Pets From The Association of Sanctuaries (TAOS), this website provides access to publications, resources, and advocacy pieces presenting arguments against keeping wildlife as pets. Find materials "to post, distribute, or present in your local community, at club meetings, schools, religious institutions, and other organizations," such as Web banners, flyers, and ads to place in newspapers. Includes a lovely "Slide Show" featuring wildlife in their natural habitats, plus a teacher's guide and materials suitable for children. In publication since 1991, Green Teacher has "published
several hundred teaching strategies, activities, and lesson plans, the best
of which were recently repackaged into twelve inexpensive, 'E-Packs.'" Landscape Ecology The first 10 years' issues of this journal (240 articles) have been scanned and are available as PDF files for readers to view online, free of charge. This project was done in cooperation with Kluwer, the journal's current publisher. EPA Draft Report on the Environment
(summer 2003) The Environmental protection Agency published a draft report on the environment as the first summary of work on a project called the Environmental Indicators Initiative that was launched in November 2001. The executive summary calls the report the EPA's "first-ever national picture of the U.S. environment," describing "what EPA knows-and doesn't know-about the current state of the environment at the national level, and how the environment is changing. The report highlights the progress our nation has made in protecting its air, water, and land resources, and describes the measures that can be used to track the status of the environment and human health." The report (and Web page) has sections entitled, Air, Water, Land, Human Health, Ecological Condition, Working Together, and Appendices. When the report was announced, a story in the New York Times on June 19, 2003 told readers that many sections were heavily edited before the report was presented to the public. In an article called, "Report by E.P.A. Leaves Out Data on Climate Change," Andrew C. Revkin and Katharine Q. Seelye explain that sections on the risks of global warming were heavily edited at the directive of the Bush administration. They say that, "Among the deletions were conclusions about the likely human contribution to warming from a 2001 report on climate by the National Research Council that the White House had commissioned and that President Bush had endorsed in speeches that year. White House officials also deleted a reference to a 1999 study showing that global temperatures had risen sharply in the previous decade compared with the last 1,000 years. In its place, administration officials added a reference to a new study, partly financed by the American Petroleum Institute, questioning that conclusion." Conferences & Educational Opportunities Education Programs For Youth Education Programs For Youth; School's Out! (OUT8162) is a 3-day course offered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This course presents participants with the elements of designing outdoor programs for youth (e.g. after school, day and residential camps, and weekend programs) in a non-formal setting, such as wildlife refuges, parks, and so forth. It offers opportunities for participants to create or modify exciting, safe, natural resource-focused youth programs, including staff training, that help to address site missions and/or management objectives.
